Watching this excellent talk by Danny Hillis reminded me of my least favorite law in NY. Essentially in N.Y. unlike every other state you are not allowed to do tests on yourself unless you are a licensed lab. Legally you cannot even do the 23andme spit test from N.Y. state but must send in the sample from one of the other 49. This is a terrible state of affairs. The more information we have as individuals the better. It would be great if we could measure our HDL LDL cholesterol on a day to day basis. Humans are good at control and we can respond to the information we have. The fact that N.Y. has this law is a mystery to me. On a personal level I have had to go through the medical system which is wasteful or forgo tests all together. We need information. It is the future. This law in N.Y. to me is a mystery, its misguided in my opinion and I think its a problem.
